I am curious

what you all think of my brother's Pastor. He does not allow his congregation to bring in the entire Bible to church. He says we are living in a New Testament world and we have no need for the Old Testament. He has said many things that just don't sound right to me so I no longer attend there. When my brother first became a Christian I thought it would be nice to attend church with family as my husband is not saved so only myself and the children attend. When I first left he had preached that we gain and lose our salvation according to our works. If we do something to lose our salvation we must repent to the Pastor to gain back our salvation. I tried to talk with him about this after he stated it to get more information regarding where he got this from in the Bible, but he would not talk to me about it. I assumed it was because I already had some knowledge of the Bible as I had been a Christian for years. The majority of his congregation are drug addicts, alcoholics, prostitutes, etc. They are all very needy people. There just does not seem to be a balance of different kinds of people there. I feel like he has such very vulnerable people there (some even court ordered as he has a drug rehab as well). It just seems like he takes advantage of them. I know in the beginning of my brother attending there he kept my brother on a very tight chain and did not let him spend very much time with his own family. Anyways, this last service I went to was about faith. He said that if we pray God's will over someone who is sick and they die anyway we cannot say, "Oh that was God's will". He said it is the devil who comes to seek, kill, & destroy so then our faith was not strong enough as God's will is to give life and give it abundantly. So therefore the devil's will was done and not God's. I could not believe I was hearing it. I just think he is taking advantage of these very vulnerable people.

It does not help either that he is seen as such a fabulous man who has helped all of these people get their lives straightened out. My mother has put him up on a pedestal and says he should praised for all he has done. I said no we should be praising God not Steve.

So, anyway, thank you for letting me vent regarding all of this. Sometimes I worry about my attitude toward him. Why do I feel this way about this man? But there are just so many red flags.

Hi Terrianne,
I'd like to discuss what the Bible says about some of these points. Would it be ok if we moved this to the Bible Study forum?

Yes, absolutely. I have really been struggling with this for a long time and most of my family is just very open to everything. They are Catholic, but believe that we should have an open mind to everything.

Great topics! Let's try to break this down so we can follow the points.

1. The New Testament is all we need. Since we have Jesus, the Old Testament is no longer needed today.

2. Eternal security - Once Saved Always Saved - or can you loose your Salvation

3. Confession to a Pastor only

4. God's sovereign Will - even when things go differently than what we have prayed for.

5. Only the Pastor knows who is the right person for us to marry.

I have to run out for a bit, but this should get us started. I am looking forward to having a great discussion.

OK, on topic #1 I am under the impression that the entire Bible was prepared and saved for us all of these years to study and learn from as it is all valid toward our growing in Christ. (I got a little tongue tied so I hope this makes sense.)

On #2 I would think that it is not possible to lose salvation, but maybe never have actually had in the first place? I have a verse that I want to use here and I cannot remember what it is I will find it and come back to it.

#3 drives me crazy regarding my brother. He is always calling me (well, not always)and says he needs to "repent" to Steve. I have told him, "You may need to repent, but not to Steve. If you want to also share with Steve I think that is fine, but I do not think that he should be placing Steve in that position."

#4 I believe in praying for God to heal, but I also know that my prayer may be answered differently. I also believe that a Christian is ultimately healed after death. I was shocked to hear them tell people that when someone died it was because their faith was no longer good enough.

And on #5 all I can say is that I believe that had my brother waited on God he would have found the woman who was perfect for him.

I agree with everything you said, Terrianne.

1. The Old Testament is about Jesus. It is the History of Him. There are so many prophesies about Jesus’ coming that we can’t just toss it out. Jesus was there in the beginning when God created the world.

John 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

2 Timothy 3:15-17 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Here Paul is telling us that ALL Scripture is profitable. During this time, the New Testament hadn’t been written, so Paul has to be talking about the Old Testament Scriptures.

Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
This is pretty clear to me that once we belong to the Lord in heart soul and mind, we are His.
Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
3. Romans 14:11-12 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
Our accounting is to the Lord, Himself.
Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
Mark 2:7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

4. God's sovereign Will - even when things go differently than what we have prayed for.

Taking a look at the life of Joseph. He was sold into slavery by his brothers? Was that God's Will? God did use it for good. Whatever happens we need to remember that God IS in control.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5. Only the Pastor knows who is the right person for us to marry.
Only GOD knows the perfect match for our lives. Who is anyone to put themselves above God?
There are consequences for not choosing God's Best for our lives. Can it work out? Certainly. ! But it will take work. As long as our heart's desire is to serve the Lord, things always work out for His honor and glory.
Ok Carolyn, the verse that I was thinking of for topic #2 is Hebrews 6:4-6
4 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come,
6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God, and put Him to open shame.
this is from my Ryrie Study Bible New American Standard
