One Step At A Time--Quit Smoking--Chapter 1

Activity One: What are the costs and benefits of Smoking?

1. What are the benefits I get from smoking?

     --Helps me relax
     --Helps pass the time away
--Something to do other than sitting and
       thinking of past.

2. Are there things I could do to get these same benefits without smoking?

      --Go for a walk
      --Get involved with some craft
--Work on more graphics on computer
      --Just keep myself busy

3. What bad effects have I had from smoking?

     --smokers cough
--close, apartment, ext have a smell
     --bad breathe
     --stained fingers, walls ext.

4. There are times when I feel embarrassed or awkward because I smoke. Why do I feel this way?

--I am a Christian, my body is a temple of God's. I have no right to pollute it.
--there are more non-smokers than smokers.
--sneaking outside during a meeting just to have a cigarette.

5. How does smoking hurt those who are close to me?

--second hand smoke is as dangerous to them as smoking is to me.
     --embarrassed to see me smoking
     --worry about my health

6. What benefits would those who are close to me and I get if I quit?

     --I will save money
     --be in better health
--won't smell of smoke all the time
--less worry about if I will be around

7. Calculate how much you spend on cigarettes each day. Multiply this by 365 to figure out the yearly cost. This figure may surprise you. Wouldn't you rather have this money for something else?

1 package daily with average cost of $10.00
365 days in a year X365
Total average cost per year 3,650.00

There are all kinds of other place that I could use this money, new clothes, traveling, ext.
